ABOUT

My Dog’s Followers is an art project. For this series, I am painting portraits of dogs that follow my dog, Guess, on Instagram @guesswithsticks. I post the finished portraits to my other Instagram feed, @mydogsfollowers and tag the dog in question.

The original portraits are for sale. In some cases, the human behind the dog might like to purchase the original. However, if you see a painting of a dog you don’t know and you’d like to buy it, please drop me a line. I also accept commissions for portraits of any dog. Your dog needn’t have its own Instagram account. That would be silly. It doesn’t even have to be your dog. Heck, you can even purchase a portrait of my dog, Guess. She’s very cute and practically a C-list dog celebrity. You might enjoy having a meticulously painted portrait of her hanging in your home.

All commissioned portraits are painted in the style and format you see here. My service is unique in that it does not offer customization. All portraits are painted with gouache on an 8” x 10” or 10” x 12” sheet of paperboard.

Please email me at hello@carriewalker.ca for more information or to order a dog portrait.

PRICING

Portraits start at $325 USD, plus 5% GST and shipping. Prices are subject to change.

HOW TO ORDER

Portraits are based on photographs provided by you of your dog. In order to create the best portrait possible, I require high resolution, in-focus, close-up photos of your dog looking into the camera. Where possible, photograph your pooch outside and at eye level.

Please email your jpegs to hello@carriewalker.ca

OTHER IMPORTANT, ALBEIT PERHAPS REPETITIVE, INFORMATION

All portraits are painted of your dog face first on a sheet of black paperboard with gouache paints. Please refer to the gallery for examples. I do not offer any customization of portraits nor do I paint multiple dogs on a single sheet of paper. If you would like a portrait with a different angle, in a different style or at a different price, I’d be pleased to point you in the direction of another artist or you can google “commission dog portrait [insert style] [insert price].”

I offer a satisfaction guarantee. Upon completing your dog portrait, I will email you a jpeg of the portrait. At this time, you may request alterations to specific details. Only when, and if, you are satisfied will full payment be requested and the portrait shipped.

COPYRIGHT

Although you own the original portrait, as the artist, I retain the copyright and reproduction rights to the painting. I may use completed portraits in promotional materials such as postcards, on my website, social media and/or publications. You are free to post digital copies of the portrait to social media platforms with credit to Carrie Walker and/or @mydogsfollowers.

ABOUT THE MATERIALS

All portraits are painted with gouache on paperboard.

Gouache is a water soluble paint comprised of pigment suspended in a gluey binder. It tends to be more opaque than watercolour paints. I use the finest gouache available, made by M. Graham and Co. in West Linn, Oregon. The paints are made from pigment, honey and gum arabic. Northwest blackberry honey. That’s right. This paint has honey in it. I just realized that my paintings are not vegan.

The paperboard I use is Canson Mi-Tientes mount board. It’s comprised of a piece of Canson Mi-Tientes drawing paper laminated to a piece of Canson Conservation board. It’s made in France. I like it because it gives the drawing a bit more heft and makes it less fragile. Also, the moisture in paint can cause paper to buckle. If the paper is adhered to a board it won’t buckle.
