I am a visual artist based in Vancouver, Canada. My practice is strongly rooted in drawing. Humour and playfulness are vital elements in my work. This is the case whether I am creating an idiosyncratic archive of the emotive qualities found in the faces of rodents, bats and chickens through detailed pen and ink drawings or creating fantastical and fragmented narratives by placing animals out of context in found landscapes. I have also been drawing portraits of women who share my full name, Carrie Walker, from images found on the internet. Titles play an important role in my work. They are typically gleaned from the text of my reference materials (field guides, animal encyclopedias or websites); these fragments of text taken out of context may gently nudge the viewer’s interpretation of the work.
